THE FACTS ON SUN EXPOSURE

Over the last thirty years the incidents of basal cell carcinoma, more commonly known as skin cancer, has tripled for women under forty. Some of the reasons are obvious. Despite all the warnings 34% of women do not use sunscreen and sunburns are on the rise.

There are some not-so-obvious explanations for the spike in skin cancer also. For instance, the scalp is a common area for precancers because we don’t use sunscreen on the roots of our hair near the part making it prone to sunburn. Also, unless you or your stylist are specifically looking for it, skin cancer can often go undetected on your scalp because your hair covers it up. Lipsticks and gloss can also be harmful because the tiny metallic flecks act as mirrors reflecting the sun onto your mouth. The skin colored area around the lips is extremely vulnerable to this reflection.

Any time you are going outside, you should make sunscreen part of your regimen. There are numerous options for protecting yourself. Use a daily moisturizer with spf protection such as Emerita’s Dayface Cream with SPF 15. If you are going to spend the day outdoors, consider sun protective clothing and a broad spectrum sunscreen. Don’t think that just because you are using a high spf that it lasts any longer. You must reapply every 2 hours. Also, try Fiesta Sun’s Appletini SPF 30 Lip Balm before you apply lipstick or gloss to protect the sensitive mouth area.
